A person of exceptional refinement and imagination who created worlds of sound that had no precedent and which of really never been imitated. Claude Debussy, a great contemporary of Ravel’s, wrote some of the most extraordinarily innovative music of the 20th century. Now and then though he wrote what’s called pure music, abstract forms of quartets, sonatas and so on.

And one of the greatest of all the nationalist composers was the Hungarian, Béla Bartók, who with his compatriot and friend, Zoltán Kodály, researched Hungarian folk music and indeed the folk music of many countries, rediscovering the language of music, transforming his own palate as a composer.

We’re featuring one of the suites from the “Water Music” played by the Australian Chamber Orchestra conducted by Richard Tognetti. The next composer was one of that group of English composers who had rediscovered their own musical language and who used it extensively.
